Level Up: boost your career through self-care

Your health and wellbeing shouldn’t come second to your career. Burnout is inevitable if you don’t make time for yourself.

Tristan Miller (BA’98), Director, Strategic Partnerships at Cover Genius, Jenny Lyons OLY (MBus(SportMgt)’26), Athlete Liaison Officer at Deloitte, and Matt Cowdell (BCom’12), Director Arthur St Digital, share practical ideas on how to sustain your focus and energy for long-term productivity and wellbeing.

Eight tips for better health and wellbeing at work

Constant hustle can’t last

‘It’s wholly unsustainable to continue to hustle in every single job and to keep going and going,’ Tristan says. ‘You’ll run out of energy, and you’ll hit blockers that you’re not prepared for.’

More hours worked doesn’t mean more output

‘The more we’ve offered flexibility, the more we’ve seen the benefits come back as a business,’ Matthew reflects.

Go back to the basics

‘Sustainable living for me over the last 12 months has been all about sleep, eating well and hydrating. And if that’s all in a line and I’m doing that well, everything around my health and wellbeing is well,’ Jenny shares.

Relax more

‘A lot of people wait for their holiday to relax,’ Tristan says. ‘You book it. It’s in six months and that’s when you’re going to find the time to relax. And then you don’t, because you get sick when you finally slow down.’

Take control of your time

‘We’re all in control of our calendars, but we don’t really think about that a lot of the time,’ Matthew reminds us. ‘It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I’m controlled by meetings that are coming at me.”’

Reset when you need to

‘Maybe your goal has just fallen apart,’ Jenny says. ‘Okay, so how do you reset that? Do you need to change the direction, the timeline? What is it that you need to change? Maybe you have to change the whole goal completely because it’s just not going to work. That’s fine too. It didn’t work. It failed. Great. What were your learnings? What’s the next goal?’

Everything in moderation

‘I was working too hard. I wasn’t finding ways to look after myself,’ Tristan says. ‘Running was good for that, but then I probably went too far in the other direction where I was running all the time and destroying myself by doing too much of that too.’

Be kind to yourself to be your best self: ‘The best version of yourself is generally something that gets triggered by you doing good things for yourself,’ says Tristan.
